Each morning I receive an email from Merriam-Webster with their Word of The Day. There are very few words that you won’t know the definition but what is interesting is the ‘Did You Know; portion of the email. Last weekend the word was ‘agrarian’. In the ‘Did You Know’ it explains that both “acre” and “agrarian” derive from the Latin noun “ager” and the Greek noun “agros,” meaning “field.” They go on to add that before the standard for an acre was set at 43,560 square feet it is believed that an acre represented a rougher measurement—the amount of land that could be plowed in one day with a yoke of oxen. So the next time someone asks you the size of your lot, give the answer in yoke of oxen form and enjoy being a Clayvin. ; )
