Commuting is the subject of this YouTube video by WNYC in New York City. I love the borough of Manhattan as well as other metro areas such as Minneapolis/St. Paul and Washington D.C. but this video is a reminder to me of one reason why Alexandria, Minnesota is such a great place to live, work and play. Not only can you be at a lake in five minutes or less from most places of employment but drive time to Alexandria destinations can be deduced simply by knowing the number of miles you have to travel (unless there is a traffic problem because some geese decide to cross the road by Knute Nelson Memorial Field). The commute from the Twin Cities is also an asset for people that have second homes on a lake in Alexandria as from most areas in the Twin Cities, the drive time is between 2 and 2 1/2 hours. Any additional time in the car for a weekend at the lake shortens the weekend too much for most people. The short drive to Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport from Alexandria is also a perk for those of us that live full-time in Alexandria but need a little time in the bright lights of a big city every now and then.
