About Lake Amelia

Lake Amelia is a 934 acre spring fed lake with good water clarity. From Alexandria, it will take you about 20 minutes to reach the northern shore of Amelia. Located in Pope County, the lake is about 4 miles northeast of Glenwood and is Pope County’s second deepest lake. Besides having Glenwood nearby, Villard is very close and Alexandria is a 25-30 minute drive north. Regarding the name of Amelia, a research volunteer at the Pope County Historical Society provided the following information; “According to “100 Years of Greatness”, a booklet about Pope County, Lake Amelia was named after Amelia Hutchins, the wife of Joseph C. Hutchins. Another source (an old newspaper article without documentation) says it was named after a little girl killed by Indians and buried along the SE shore. Since the Hutchins family are listed as land owners along the lake, and that they first settled there in 1862, we feel that the lake being named after Amelia Hutchins is the most accurate. The 1888 History of Pope and Stevens County lists Amelia as a lake so we know it was already named by then, which also helps support our conclusion.”
