ABOUT LAKE IRENE
Lake Irene is a 639 acre lake that is approximately a 15 minute drive north from Alexandria on Highway 29. Its neighbor is the largest lake in Douglas County, Lake Miltona, and the two names are connected. Early residents in the area were the Roadruck family. Mrs. Roadruck’s name was Miltona and she and her husband had a daughter named Irene. Thankfully they determined Lake Roadruck wouldn’t have been a good marketing choice. The DNR reports water clarity of 6 feet in its 2014 Fisheries Lake Survey and a maximum depth of 44 feet. At the southwest corner of Lake Ida is the popular Chet’s Lakeside Inn. It’ll always be ‘Chet’s Chicken Shack’ to me and is a ‘must visit’ during the summer months. Another must visit is the vegetable stand that is across Highway 29 on N Lake Miltona Drive. Usually there is a wide variety of heirloom tomatoes. You bag what you want, weight it and push your money through a hole in the wall. Also nearby the south of Irene are two gas stations/stores and the city of Miltona.
Lake Irene’s lake classification is General Development.
